We chose to stay in a cozy Airbnb right in the heart of Catania, allowing us easy access to all the city had to offer. With the average temperature hovering around a comfortable 25°C, we knew we were in for a delightful stay.
Exploring the City
Catania boasts a long and storied history dating back to ancient times, and evidence of its past can be found around every corner. We took advantage of the free daily walking tours, led by knowledgeable guides who shared fascinating insights into the city’s architecture, landmarks, and culture. Alternatively, we wandered the streets on our own, admiring the stunning avenues lined with historic buildings and bustling markets.
Beachside Bliss
No trip to Catania would be complete without a visit to its beautiful beaches. Within a short 30-minute walk from the city center, we discovered an array of beach clubs offering relaxation and recreation. One standout was the Lido Azzuro, where for a mere 20 €, we enjoyed a day of sun, sand, and sea. With umbrellas and deck chairs provided, we spent hours basking in the Mediterranean sun and swimming in the refreshing waters.
Culinary Delights
Of course, no visit to Sicily would be complete without indulging in its delectable cuisine. Catania is renowned for its fresh seafood, vibrant street food scene, and mouthwatering desserts. We savored local specialties such as arancini, cannoli, and granita, treating our taste buds to a symphony of flavors that perfectly complemented our Mediterranean adventure.

What to see in Catania
This fountain symbolizes the history of Catania. There used to live little elephants on the island.
This is the most active volcano in Europe. I recommend a guided hiking tour up to one of the many craters.
This Roman theatre is one of the largest you can find. It is partly hidden underneath houses but definitely worth a visit.
On AirBnB or Tripadvisor you can look for fun things to do. One of them is a short boat ride on the Mediterranean with a stop to swim.
If you are a fish lover, you can stroll across the fish market where you find daily fresh caught fish.
In summer I can highly recommend eating some delicious granita (similar to ice cream) and brioche. Both delicious food for any time of the day.
A Day Trip to Siracusa: Exploring Southern Sicily’s Rich Heritage
I can also recommend a day trip to the southern city of Siracusa. It also has a lot of historic sights like a castle, church, marketplace, and archeological excavation. The cheap bus takes you to Siracusa within 2 hours.
